Thanks for this diversion back to my childhood. I, too visited "the House" back in the mid-seventies, and I do remember being able to traverse the mysterious secret stairs down from somewhere up above. This memory just came back to me the other day, but I thought it was in the Witch House. (I was thinking that the accused hid in the staircase). At any rate, thanks again for jogging my fading memory. My grandparents wintered in Winthrop, and we were able to visit many of the historic and not-so-historic sites during trips there on school breaks.

I was there about 14 years ago and it seems as though they have changed the house quite a bit. It has more of the original details back then. I feel it was much better than. But still very cool. I LOVE the house and its history!!!

I miss seeing these old towns that they are just destroying to put up modern towns. I feel sorry for children of the future when so much is already gone, but not here, thanks to everyone involved preserving this great village! an absolute must see!!!

went on vacation in 2002 and stopped in Salem on our way to Bar Harbor from New York we live in Michigan. we went up the entire coast and we're on a time constraint so we never made it in the house but road by within 20 feet and thanks to your great story and pictures I feel we have been there. the story is very informative and very neat to see history we wish we would have went in and want to go back. thank you for the time you've taken so I can have a great memory of Salem.

Thanks so much for your post, full of terrific details about The House of the Seven Gables! I toured it a few months ago and have just finished the novel, so it was a treat to revisit it after the fact by way of your writing.

Wonderful post! I hope, as a nation, we never fail to preserve our treasures. I have to laugh at our county museum. Our brag-about is a house that's over 100 years old! That's saying something, and I hope we're able to keep and preserve it for future generations, too.

Wow! I had to take that in several reads! I didn't want to miss anything. LOVE the pavers in that seaside garden. LOVE. My ideal. No mowing, thank you very much. And lots of places for patio furniture and a picnic table. They probably didn't have them back then though, did they?

I absolutely love old homes. So much better than the cracker jack boxes of today! They actually shouldn't be in the same sentence.

Oh man, it ated my first comment! Now I can't remember what hugely enlightening thing I had to say!

I think it was mainly how fascinating a character Susannah Ingersoll seemed to be.

Also the house is beautiful and full of so many lovely things. I suppose it is strictly forbidden to have a wee nap in one of the lovely beds?
